As the story goes, Mr. Harms built Grandpa's in 1898 and sold it to Leo Lang in 1902, who is responsible for the original tavern. In 1918 Leo was killed, in his own car, by a passing train right in front of this place. He was survived by an orphan daughter, Helene. In 1919 upon returning from W.W.I., Herb Rugen married Helene and took over the operation until his death in 1968. Herb and Helene's daughter Jeanne then ran the place for many years. Finally in 1975 Jeanne sold the place to Tom Dwyer who ran it until 1997.
The bar is currently owned by a local family, the Middleton's, and is open for lunch and dinner daily. In 2006, the place was remodeled and great care was taken to preserve the "old world" tavern look of yesteryear. So sit back, relax, enjoy and watch the trains go by while enjoying one of your favorite libations or tavern bites.

Homer's Ice Cream & Restaurant

In 1935, restaurant owner Gus Poulos created his first batch of homemade ice cream that was far richer and more satisfying than any other in that era, anywhere in Chicago. Word traveled fast about the quality of Homer's Ice Cream. Its humble beginnings as a two-table ice cream parlor did not last long. Soon people from all around, up and down Chicago's North Shore came to Homer's.
Gus' two sons, Steve and Dean, who grew up in Wilmette, continue to carry on their father's devotion to providing the finest quality ice creams and toppings to their customers. They still make ice creams the old-fashioned way: thick, heavy, and so very delicious.
